Resources needed to carry out my game plan are:
* Reference Librarian- The reference librarian will be needed to help reinforce research skills and resources for students.
* Computer Lab- Will be needed to show students how to use search engines to gain credible research information.
*Power point on plagiarism- to be shown to reinforce what plagiarism is and how it can be avoided
*Perdue Owl web Site- Students will review and navigate on the Perdue Owl Writing site at http://owl.english.purdue.edu/
*Share the information from a technology survey taken previously by colleagues within the district with administration.
*Encourage our IT Department to search for grants and ways to upgrade our current technology.
Steps taken so Far:
To date I haven't had enough time to take any action. I am busy at school writing finals and preparing for end of year procedures.
Additional Information Needed:
Power points and worksheets on citations and plagiarism.
Reputable research search engine sites.
MLA & APA guide booklets.

Hi, Lora.
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow English teacher, I also spend a lot of time trying to teach my students to avoid plagiarism, and it's a constant battle. This year I have finally convinced my seventh graders that they may not just copy and paste information, but they don't completely understand the idea of rephrasing it in their own words; they think substituting in a few synonyms is sufficient. Enlisting your librarian's help is a great idea.
Purdue's online writing lab is a great resource. The University of Wisconsin also has a good one at http://writing.wisc.edu/.
Good luck with your GAME plan.

Becky,
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting and the great information. To help my students with plagiarism, I tell them about my weekend, local or a school event and then have them write in their words what I said without repeating my words exactly.

Lora,
ReplyDeleteYou have identified several resources you will need to be successful in pursuing your GAME plan. Teaching students how not to plagiarize is difficult and I applaud your efforts. I think students need to be taught early how to cite sources properly and put information in their own words. I really like the activity you described to help your students practice rewriting information in their own words.
